Help us by showing your LOVE for the Animals!!
Bernie and Rusty Roy THANK YOU!
We are so grateful that the Neenah Animal Shelter and Jan would TAKE A CHANCE on us; a bonded pair of 16 yr old cats! We get that it may not be the right time for you to add a cat or dog to your family, but it sure would help if you could support the temporary home for nearly 150 animals residing at the Neenah Animal Shelter right now.
#GivingTuesday falls on November 28th this year. It's a global day of generosity and your chance to make a difference for me and my other furry friends that depend on the shelter for temporary housing. The Neenah Animal Shelter's #GivingTuesday theme is #NASTakeAChanceOnMe because that's what they're really good at; taking a chance on dogs and cats who may otherwise not have a chance at a forever home. Will you please take a chance on them by giving generously? Purrs and Head Bonks, Bernie |
The Rest of the Rusty Roy and Bernie Story
And the rest of the story from Jan:
"That poor little scared, grieving, 16-year old cat ended up giving me his heart. (Rusty) He spent the first 24 hours at my house hiding inside my box spring. I was not able to coax him out. When I was able to retrieve him, I made his home in my walk-in bedroom closet. There I spent time with him just laying on the floor at first. Then gradually, he allowed me to pet him, and finally over a couple of weeks, he would come out from under the clothes to greet me. At that point of time he was able to handle the run of the house but still hid. I called him my “scared-y-cat”
I allowed both cats in bed but had to make it clear to dominant Bernie, that Rusty was important to me. In so doing, Rusty came to be a quiet, gentle sleeping partner where as Bernie was a bulldozer disrupting my sleep with his frequent comings and goings.
That characterized so much of our interactions. Bernie’s meow is a wail. Rusty softly peeped. Bernie demands time in my lap. Rusty quietly laid down beside me on the couch. Bernie swats the dog if he becomes too obnoxious. Rusty hid. Then made a getaway at an opportune moment. Bernie wants different environments. Rusty was happy in the house. ‘Til one day…
He slipped out unbeknownst to me until he did not show up for the next morning’s meal. I hunted frantically and cried and prayed. I told God I understood that very frail 19 year old cats sometimes slip away to die, and if that was the case, and that’s what Rusty wanted, I was okay with that, but if not, I wanted him back. I searched and grieved all day. Finally I sat down on my deck and just whispered his name over and over. I don’t know what transpired, but after a few moments I heard his little peep, and there he was, dirty and wet, beside my chair. I believe Rusty decided to trust me with his death, and I am happy to report that for the next three weeks he continued to try to eat, try to be with us, and sought attention. He died peacefully on a soft blanket in a quiet corner of my bedroom less than 24 hours after he could no longer get up. I believe he heard all our words of love in his dying moments.
You caught me while I was still grieving, reflecting the grief of our whole household. Atticus, normally very active, just laid around despondent, and Bernie cried and cried for several days. We are all better now. Grateful that that gentle little cat, Rusty, was a part of our lives."

Where will my Donation Go?"

394 cats, 121 dogs, 1 rabbit, 1 parakeet and 1 turkey found their way to the Neenah Animal Shelter.
With these numbers comes an increase in costs. Veterinary expenses alone have topped $70,000 YTD. This year has been trying on our shelter with quite a few animals coming here in need of special medical care. Your donation goes to help offset the huge increase in veterinary costs, as well as to keep the animals warm and full of food.
Let's help animals like Bernie and Rusty Roy that made their way to our door find their forever families!
